On the fourth Sunday in Advent, the celebrant carries the Gospel at St. John’s Church in Baltimore.

    The garlands so remind me of the days at St. Philip’s, Laurel, Maryland, which has an early Vicky stone building with the roof beams and arches exposed. On 4 Advent all would go to the parish hall and construct garlands from mountain laurel, holly, and pine boughs collected from some parishioner’s wooded property. Then they would be taken into the church and swagged from lines that dropped down from the ridge beam.

      @C. Wingate: When were you at St. Philip’s? My parents are both from Laurel.
