Boëllmann at Beauvais

May 20, 2012

Terrific album, but that’s not Beauvais on the 2003 re-release.

One of the best recordings of any piece of organ music, ever, is of the Toccata from Léon Boëllmann’s Suite Gothique, played by Jennifer Bate on a 1987 recording made on the organ of Beauvais Cathedral.

One of the hallmarks of French organ building is the way in which the scale of the bombardes increases as one moves down the register, and this tradition was alive and well when Georges Danion-Gonzales rebuilt the organ at Beauvais in the 1970s. Jennifer Bate plays the hell out of both the piece and the instrument, so turn the volume up, and enjoy.
