The Choir of Wells Cathedral, under the direction of Malcolm Archer, sing “God is Gone Up,” Gerald Finzi’s Ascensiontide anthem for choir and organ that takes its lyrics from Edward Taylor’s “Meditation Twenty.”

    I find it profound that we have here a tremendously moving anthem, now firmly established in the Anglican Musical Canon, with text by a New England Puritan, set to music by an agnostic Jew: (musical) testimony to the fact that we need not make a mockery of the Sacrament of Baptism (and therefore Eucharist) in order to be inherently open, hospitable, and welcoming in our Tradition and our Church.
