The Episcopal Vacation Resort

January 23, 2010

The Monroe County Tourist Development Council has adopted (and trademarked!) one of the Episcopal Church’s favorite slogans: “come as you are,” as in (and this is the favorite), “come as you are Eucharist.” One must pause and consider what the mission of the Church has in common with warm sandy beaches, clear blue ocean, and few cares. We perhaps shouldn’t be comfortable that a Christian church, at least nominally devoted to proclaiming the Gospel and recommending the way of the Cross, shares any favorite slogan with a resort destination.

And anyway, there’s really no competition. It’s 40° in New York, and I’d rather go to the “come as you are” beach than to a “come as you are” church service. Warm sand, the slowly sinking sun, and a cool drink will top an intellectually dead sermon and a crappy choir any day.
